Frequently Asked Questions

All our lifts carry CE Certification, they have been tested and approved for use in Professional Workshops

Can I try before I buy? When can we visit ?

We are well placed in the Midlands, close the motorway network, so wherever you are, we are really not that far away! Just let us know when you’d like to come along and we will make sure that someone is on hand to look after you. We have lifts available for demonstration between 09:30 - 17:00 Monday - Friday, on an appointment basis. We will raise the car you arrive in, allowing you to see exactly how it's done, and enabling you to try different types of lifts in order that you can select the most suitable equipment for your application. If you have never used a car lift in anger before we thoroughally recommend that you make the time for a demonstration.

I have seen cheaper equipment on eBay!

Yes, as with everything these days there is a wide choice of products available from a variety of suppliers. Many companies sell Car Lifts and Garage Tools, but only one, Strongman Tools, specialise in selling to the Domestic Market. Make sure that any garage tools you buy have CE Certification, and try and ensure that this is not "self-certified", in other words has the product been independently tested to meet and exceed the applicable standards, and are the results of these tests available for you to see, should you desire? The size of our product often varies from that sold to the "Trade", as commercial units and workshops tend to be much bigger than any home garage!

If you're here because you intend to use the lift in the garage or workshop at home then we have more experience than any other company to provide you with the most suitable equipment for the job. Strongman Tools are an established company, have offices, warehouses holding stock, and a demonstration area.... we carry spare parts, accessories and will advise you on the best products, discuss the suitability of your premesis, arrange transport (which doesn't involve you having to have a fork-lift truck to unload) and install the whole package, if required.

The quality of materials we employ to manufacture Strongman Lifts, and the overall construction, including welds, has drawn wide praise from customers. Very few people will ever buy more than one lift for use at home, make sure that you are satisfied that the lift you buy is fit for purpose, capable, robust and easy to use. We always try to encourage potential customers to visit us for a demonstration.

Do you sell 2 -Post Lifts ?

We can supply 2 Post Lifts, but we tend not to specify them for domestic garages and workshops. The lifts we sell are easy to install and use. We offer Installation as a service to our customers, but many choose to save money, self install and follow the instructions (a video is available to aid 4 Post Lift Installation). 2 Post Lifts can be intrusive in the smaller spaces that tend to be available in home garages and, most importantly, the concrete base and installation criteria required for 2 Post Lifts often eliminate them from choice when considering options for home workshops. Should you be lucky enough to have sufficient space & height, a suitable base and do all your own maintenance on your cars then we will be happy to discuss the best options for 2 Post Lifts which may be suitable for your circumstances.

Can we collect or must we pay for Delivery / Installation ?

We are more than happy to help you load your own transport here at our warehouse. We have a forklift truck to help load the bulkier items on to suitable transport. Do please chat to us first about which trailer or vehicle you intend to use and how you intend to load as enclosed vans are most certainly not suitable and some consideration about unloading needs to be done in advance of you getting home! We have van & trailer delivery of 4 post lifts down to an art and charge a reasonable and competitive fee for our services. Over 50% of our customers choose to collect and install the lifts themselves, we can assist with as much, or as little, help as you need. Full instructions and, in some cases, videos, are available to ensure users can confidently assemble and safely use Strongman Car Lifts.

Does it have to be bolted down?

If it is a scissor lift, you don't necessarily have to....

Our new Tamar Scissor lifts are specifically designed to be mobile, use them in the yard if you wish, it instantly extends usable bay area (as long as the yard is concrete!). Simply wheel the lift out in the morning, safely work at any height up to 1.2m and push it back inside when all's done for the day.... Clifton platform scissor lifts are supplied with movement kits as options, they can be easily relocated around the workshop, or, again, outside if that's what you need. They are rated to 3000kg "freestanding", however, because they have a large surface area in contact with the smooth workshop floor there can be a problem when you try and drive the car over the lift in the first place, namely the lift skids forward. These lifts don't have to be bolted down, although if is never going to move it's best to, but they do benefit from being pinned in place to keep them just where you want them as you drive on and off! Customers do drill a couple of holes in the workshop floor and just drop a couple of pins in place to keep the lift stationary.

Now for the issue of Four Posts...... well there are loads of people selling four post lifts with movement kits, indeed we do so ourselves. The lifts can be used freestanding, they are intrinsically strong enough and we sometimes use them this way in our showroom when taking photos for ads etc. Many users don't bolt them down in use and there are some companies making a virtue of the fact that they are fully mobile. The next time you visit a professional workshop or car storage warehouse employing four posters just take a look to see if they are bolted down or not.... Bolted down? Most have secure foundation bolts, chemical anchors if the floor isn't the best, and sturdy metal guards protecting the posts!! You have invested in a four post lift, it is there so that you, or your chosen mechanic if you are lucky, can work under your car OR you have purchased it to ensure you can protect your investment by storing your pride and joy over another car, safely increasing SECURE storage space. If there were an accident, if someone, say, reversed into the leg of the 4 post while a car were atop, and it wasn't bolted down..........

Which is the best lift for me?

Everybody has different criteria, with different cars, garages / workshops and requirements. Do you need addtional storage, are you looking for a lift to complete a project? Do you do ALL your own servicing and maintenance? Although Strongman Tools do sell 2 Post Lifts, in other markets, in general 2 Posts are too intrusive in a domestic garage and they require substantial, reinforced, footings (200mm preferred). The choice is often between a 4 Post Lift, or Scissor Lift. The size of the garage (and the cars) is of paramount importance. If head-height is restricted then Platform Scissor Lifts come into their own - park over the top of them when not in use and you wouldn't know they were there. If you have a concrete yard then a mobile scissor lift may be the best option, to use outside on a fine day (but runners may be required either side to allow sufficient ground clearance)........ The best thing we can recommend is to call us for a chat, run through your options and, perhaps, visit us for a demonstration to assure yourself that your preferred solution is a practical and sound decision for you!

Will it be Safe?

All Strongman Tools Equipment is independently tested and is manufactured to exceed specifications of the relevant standards. All our lifts and tools have CE certification. We do not rely on hydraulics alone, even though some competitive products opt for the use of twin rams and safety valves only to afford protection ALL Strongman Lifts also employ mechanical safety equipment, usually ratchet safety interlocks, to ensure the lift or ramp is mechanically locked before you commence work on a vehicle. A suitable floor, usually a level 6" concrete base which has cured for at least eight weeks, will be required for 4 Post and Full-height Scissor Lifts.

Will it work on 240V?

Yes. All our equipment is designed to work on domestic 240V power. A 16A Motor rated breaker will be needed however, please ask for details if you are unsure. You will need to hard-wire the connection or provide a Female, round, blue / white 16A CEEForm connector to plug in the lift.
